Anyone can paste a brief into AI. Finding a writer who uses it well, and still sounds human to your customers, is the real challenge.

A US skincare brand for sensitive skin needed to hire a remote content writer who could create research-backed content that connects with American consumers, from product copy to short-form video scripts. In about four weeks, they hired a Philippines-based content specialist for $24,000 a year. The same role costs $65,000 to $80,000 in the US.

Here's how we designed a hiring test for the age of AI, and saved a candidate the client almost passed on.

The challenge: US consumer instincts, strict rules and AI everywhere

The client is a US-based skincare brand making products for sensitive skin, with almost all of its customers in the US. A returning Retalent client run by two co-founders, they came back in spring 2026 to hire a content specialist who would spend most of their time creating research-backed content and help their small marketing team when needed.

The search had to balance several demands:
  • US instincts, Asian time zone. Nearly every customer is American, so the writer needed a feel for US consumers, while the time-zone fit meant searching in Asia.
  • Strict claims rules. Content for over-the-counter skincare has to follow tight rules on what products can claim.
  • Culture fit mattered as much as skill. The client wanted someone kind, warm and curious.
  • AI made testing harder. The client worried an unsupervised test would only measure how well candidates could paste a brief into AI. Creative thinking and editorial judgment are easier to judge live, but live testing wasn't realistic with a large applicant pool.

The results: a great culture fit in four weeks

From launch to a signed contract took about four weeks. We sourced 369 candidates and tested 32 before sending the client its strongest profiles.

The client hired a Philippines-based content specialist with a background in research-backed writing and a thoughtful approach to AI, at $2,000 a month. A month into the role, they described him as a great culture fit who was doing well on his projects.

4 lessons for hiring a content writer in the age of AI

  1. Test how candidates use AI, not whether they use it. An evaluation guide that checks judgment and quality keeps unsupervised tests meaningful.
  2. Pay for independence. Choosing the near-senior salary range attracted writers who need less direction.
  3. Give promising candidates a second chance. A brand-specific task revealed the eventual hire, who might otherwise have been rejected.
  4. Specific feedback sharpens the search. Detailed notes on quality and authenticity made each shortlist better.
