Do I need to test my candidates?

Tips on using candidate testing in the most efficient way.

We often have the following conversation with our clients:
John:
Do I need to test my candidates?
Retalent:
Definitely yes! Testing is an important step of the recruitment process. This is where you may observe how potential candidates manage activities that are similar to the job they would be performing for you if they are hired.
Testing can tell you everything! Besides learning about candidates' hard skills, you can also understand how attentive, organized and responsible he/she is. For instance, the way the applicant organizes his document with a test answer tells you about his organizational skills. And for some positions this skill is crucial! If the person misses the deadline without a good reason, you can tell that he/she is irresponsible and probably won't proceed with the hiring process.

testing candidates
Here are some things that we always keep in mind while creating test tasks:
  • 1
Keep the testing process simple and you won't scare off the candidates!
Everyone likes to know what to expect from the hiring process. Applicants should understand why do they need to do the test and what will be the next step.
  • 2
Don't get too carried away with testing!
If your test consists of a lot of questions and will probably take them 2-3 hours, consider paying them for their work. Otherwise, they will get the feeling that you expect them to work for free.
  • 3
Ask candidates to send their answers in a single doc!
It will save you so much time! Moreover, you won't lose candidates' answers to some questions and you will be able to come back and read the whole test easily.
  • 4
    Carefully check the tasks!
When reviewing focus on the following questions: Is their contribution presented in an easy-to-understand format? Did they communicate clearly and provide all of the information you requested? Did they set the permissions on shared files? All of these factors will help you determine whether or not they are a good fit to work with you.
  • 5
    Don't forget about the feedback!
Even if you understand that the candidate failed the test, give him/her feedback. Applicants always expect to hear from you. If you don't tell them that you won't proceed with the process they will keep on texting you and leave negative reviews about your company. You can also give your candidates advice on improving their skills.
It is to say that testing plays an important role in the hiring process. It allows you to filter all applicants and interview only those, who will probably fit your company. In Retalent we always recommend our clients to create test tasks. And from our experience, it is a very efficient way of evaluating potential employees
