How a Fast-Growing AI Startup Hired a Creative Producer to Scale Short-Form Video

Plenty of companies sit on hours of great footage that never becomes content. The problem isn't the footage. It's finding someone who can edit like a pro and think like a growth marketer.

A fast-growing AI platform for car dealerships needed to hire a social media content creator to turn its production team's footage into around 100 short-form videos a month. In about six weeks, they hired a Morocco-based creative producer who had grown his own automotive channels to more than 130,000 followers, with several videos passing a million views.

Here's how we turned a shifting brief into a clear role, and found a rare hybrid editor-creator.

The challenge: a moving target and a split candidate pool

The client is a fast-growing AI acceleration platform for car dealerships, and a returning Retalent client. The search was led by their COO, together with their Media Director and marketing lead. They needed someone to turn a large library of in-house footage into high-volume short-form content that drives organic growth, and to report on how it performs.

The search had three big hurdles:
  • The role kept changing. Within two weeks it shifted from video editor to organic growth lead and back toward content creator. At one point, the scope covered what would normally be three or four specialist roles.
  • The output target was demanding. Around 100 social videos a month, shared between the new hire and the Media Director, on Pacific Time.
  • The process was long, and the pool split in two. The client's own process had five stages, including three unpaid tests, which risked losing employed candidates. And most applicants were either strategists who didn't edit short-form video or editors without strategic depth.

The results: a proven creator with 130K+ followers

From kickoff to the hiring decision took about six weeks. Out of 532 candidates sourced and 48 tested, the client chose a Morocco-based video editor and content creator who had grown his own automotive channels to more than 130,000 followers, with several videos passing a million views.

He joined as Creative Producer at $5,000 a month in August. Three weeks in, the client's COO reported he was doing excellent.

4 lessons for hiring a social media content creator

  1. Lock the role before you source. If your brief covers three or four specialist jobs, agree on the core first, or no candidate will fit.
  2. Use tests as screening, not hurdles. Turning one test into a pre-interview task kept a long process workable for employed candidates.
  3. Look where creators live. Headhunting on Instagram and TikTok found the hybrid editor-creator that job boards missed.
  4. Move fast on the front-runner. Great creators get multiple offers. A quick decision kept this one.
